GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- The Sporting News is naming Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson its NFL Executive of the Year.

Thompson's three-year effort to rebuild the Packers' roster boosted the team from a 4-12 record in 2005 to within one overtime period of a trip to the Super Bowl last season.

The Packers lost to the New York Giants in the NFC Championship game in January.

Thompson received 19 of 48 votes cast by NFL general managers and other executives.

He beat out Giants general manager Jerry Reese, who received nine.

The award is named after former New York Giants executive George Young.
