NEW YORK (AP) -- Jerel McNeal had 20 points and seven rebounds to lead No. 25 Marquette to a 73-64 victory over St. John's Wednesday night.
It was the Golden Eagles' third straight win after a two-game losing streak.
Marquette took control of the game with its trademark defense.
The Golden Eagles had eight steals in forcing 16 first-half turnovers on the way to a 36-24 lead.
The Golden Eagles led by as many as 23 at several points in the game.
The Red Storm managed a late 11-4 run to pull to 69-61 with 21 seconds left.
But Marquette held on for the nine-point win.
Dominic James had 19 points for Marquette, including going 9-for-9 from the free-throw line.
Anthony Mason Jr. had 20 points for St. John's, while Paris Horne and Eugene Lawrence each added 12 points.
