GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Green Bay Packers chairman Bob Harlan says general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy give the Green Bay Packers their best one-two football punch since Ron Wolf and Mike Holmgren.

So Harlan says he's hoping to get both men signed to long-term contract extensions before he turns over the organization to his successor, Mark Murphy, after the season.

The Packers board of directors approved the 52-year-old Murphy Tuesday to become the new president and CEO.

Harlan will stay on as chairman emeritus and consultant.

Harlan says he hopes to have a deal in place with Thompson by the end of this month, and it will be up to Thompson to work with McCarthy on an extension, but he wants that done soon as well.

With the Packers off to a 10-2 start, both men figure to get significant raises.

Thompson's pay could go from about $1 million annually to roughly $2 million, while McCarthy's yearly salary should top the league average of about $3.5 million.

Harlan compares them to the team of Wolf and Holmgren that were in charge when the Packers played in the Super Bowl in 1997 and 1998, winning it in 1997.

And he says their young ages make it likely they will be around for quite a while.

Thompson is 54 and McCarthy is 44.
