Prepping the Course

Daily maintenance for Greenwod Hills Country Club begins early. Typically the grounds crew starts before sunrise, ready to tackle the everyday grind of grooming one of the areas finest courses.

"The guys usually get in around 4:30" said maintenance crew member Dan Vergin. "There are different jobs listed each day. The greens get cut everyday. The fair ways every other day."

But maintaining the pristine conditions of Greenwood Hills doesn't come without challenges. The course is cut right out of farmland and forest, making for less than ideal soil conditions.

"We make sure water drains properly and we make sure that the greens and fair ways are watered during the dry spell to maintain that pristine, nearly perfect course," Vergin said.

Plus, it's called Greenwood Hills for good reason. With plenty of elevated greens and tee boxes, the crew works tirelessly to fight gravity. Keeping the peaks from drying out, and the valleys from becoming water hazards.

"It's a more difficult course because of all the hills. If it had flat greens and flat fairways it'd be easier to maintain."

And with the NewsChannel 7 Classic returning to Greenwood Hills later this week, the crew expects the course to be in tip top shape come tee time.

"For the Channel Seven Classic, this course will be in the best shape it's ever been in."
