The weather is changing to feel more like Fall and so are the leaves.
Around this time every year the area is dazzled with orange, red and yellow leaves. The green leaves are changing because there is less sunlight now that the summer is faltering away. However, the reason why the green leaves change goes far beyond the sunshine.
"The chlorophyll a and b are actually starting to break down. All of the other photosynthetic pigments are considered accessory pigments," said Darla Zastrow, a lecturer from the department of Biological Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County. Zastrow added, the red pigment has always been there but now it is showing up because chlorophyll a and b are breaking down.
She said the pigment is also a keratin that produces the color orange. When the plant no longer needs photosynthesis and the weather is colder, that's when the brown leaves appear.
