Doctors Warn of Risk of Food Poisoning on Holidays

Barbeques and picnics are often the center of summer holiday celebrations but it's important to put safety first.

Doctors at Aspirus walk-in clinics say many patients come in with food poisoning during the hot summer months.

In the right circumstances harmful micro-organisms can multiply on food.

When this happens someone eating that food can get sick and need medical help.

"If you have significant pain or evidence of bleeding or if you have significant fever. Those are also indications to be seen," says Dr. Bonnie Samuelson.

Experts say the best way to avoid food poisoning is to keep cold food cold.

Holding food outside at unsafe temperatures is the prime cause of foodbourne illness.

Food should never be left out more than an hour if the temperature is above 90 degrees.

Doctors say play it safe and put leftover food back on ice as soon you are finished eating.
