Animal Lovers Remember Pets When Holiday Shopping

They may not be able to tell you what they want for Christmas, but many pets have come to expect a gift under the tree.

The owner of Katzenbarker's, a Wausau pet supply store, says a majority of her customers remember Fido during the holidays.

It's the time of year we try to do something nice for those we care about... and that includes our pets.

"Dogs and cats are perceived more than ever as part of the family at this point and on Christmas morning when the dog is scampering around bothering everybody its nice to be able to pull out a present and give it to them," Lois Bearjar said.

Customer Marcy Fehrman always remembers her golden retriever.

"We got her some healthy treats in an attractive package which she probably doesn't care about and a new toy!"

Fehrman even got her daughter's dog... her granddog.. a gift.

Most customers stick with the necessities when deciding what to give their furry companions.

"Mostly at Christmas time, toys and treats are the two biggest sellers. Sometimes people are a little more practical they might get boots or a coat or a sweater if its a smaller dog or they need the protection," Bearjar said.

And there's always the novelty gift. Katzenbarker's sells Bowser Beer and Beer Bones for dogs... non-alcholic of course.

If you're giving the gift of a new pet, Bearjar recommends waiting until after the holiday hustle and bustle is over, or it could be too overwhelming for the new pet.
