Marathon County CrimeStoppers is looking for your help to solve two recent thefts at Granite Peak in Rib Mountain.

Over the last several years, a string of thefts have occurred at the ski hill.

Authorities are hoping the trend stops now.

"This year it's starting, now that the ski season is here," said Det. Bill Millhausen, with the Marathon County Sheriff's Dept.

He says a pair if K-2 Apache Striker skis and M12 Bindings valued at $1,025 was stolen Dec. 29th. Also taken was a backpack filled with expensive items, like a camera, ski helmet and gloves.

He warns skiiers to lock up your expensive things when hitting the slopes.

"There are areas where they can be locked and secured, if not you can do your own, such as a bike chain or a bike cable if you want to lock them," the detective said.

If you take a look around, you'll notice hundreds of pairs of skis, poles and expensive snowboards unsecured on a busy weekend.

Theft is a crime of opportunity, Det. Millhausen says, and though someone may not plan on committing a crime, when they see expensive equipment unattended, it may be too hard to resist.

And if you become a victim of a crime, you likely won't ever see your property again.

"A very, very slim chance of having it returned. We do a lot of different things, monitor a lot of our resources to try and locate the property but there's so many different arenas for the stuff to be sold," he said.

He says each winter season there are around 12 reported thefts on the hill.

Granite Peak also encourages its guests to lock their equipment.
