The frigid cold didn't stop hundreds of adventure seekers from flying down Wausau's Sylvan Hill Saturday.

But that wasn't the case Saturday when the tubing destination was shut down because of dangerous windchills.

"It's a little cold out here but not too bad, as long as you dress warm," said Blain Unruh, of Rothschild.

If you bundle up, frigid temperatures shouldn't hamper your experience at Sylvan Hill.

"You should always prepare for the weather. Tennis shoes and ankle socks don't do it up here," said Nick Pavolovich, the facility manager.

But sometimes, like Saturday, wind chills and freezing temperatures are too dangerous for riders to be welcome. As a result, the hill closes.

"The problem is is that when conditions get below zero windchill, not only are we concerned for the public but we're concerned for the employees because we're asking them to stand out here for three and a half hours at a time," Pavolovich said.

He says the general rule of thumb is anytime the temperature and wind chill combine to 20 below zero or lower, they're forced to shut down.

"People make plans to come here and by closing I know it's a giant disappointment but we have to look out for everybody...no one wants frostbite."

Pavolovich feels badk about disappointing customers Saturday, but that didn't stop hundreds from showing up Sunday.

"It's been very busy. It's been unbelievable....I've only been here two years, but it was nothing like this last year."

And the windchill can't take that away.
