Your kids might be planning their trick-or-treating attack already, but you may want to get involved before they head out.

The state Department of Correction wants to make sure you know where sex offenders are living before you send your kids out. Probation agents will be out and about as well checking up on sex offenders when the kids hit the sidewalks armed with buckets and bags for candy.

"They like dressing up and getting out," says Ted Wheeler.

"I think it's important for them to go and experience what it's like—dress up and have a good time," says Kerrie Erickson.

But, parents we talked say what's even more important that the frills and fancy costumes is making sure their kids stay safe.

"I would not let them go out by themselves; we always go with them," says Tiffany Weiss.

"The number one thing would be that they're supervised," says Blake Handrick.

Gary Stinson with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections says it won't be completely up to parents to make sure trick-or-treaters don't accidentally knock on the wrong door.

They have to "keep lights off, can't have decorations, can't participate in Halloween in any way shape, form or manner,” Stinson says.

He says every sex offender still under supervision is reminded of the rules and during trick-or-treat hours and a team will be out checking to make sure they listened. But, he says parents should also do some research: There's a map that plots where sex offenders live.

"This is a day and age where there's a lot of technology available to us. I really encourage parents to look at the website,” Stinson says. “You don't want to send your kids into a neighborhood or street or residence that has multiple sex offenders living in it. That's the most important thing."
