Some 2nd and 3rd grade students at the McKinley Center are preparing for the 150th birthday of Stevens Point.

In honor of the once in a lifetime celebration, students are getting creative by bringing their favorite books to life through a float that will be in the parade on May 17th. The celebration is titled 'Contributions We have Made' focusing on what community members and business have done for the city.

Teachers at McKinley thought one of the most important things they have contributed to the city is teaching students to read and they say students can't wait for the big reveal.

Shana Halverson, 3rd grade teacher, says, "They're very excited. The kids have picked their favorite book and they've been working very hard on making covers and are really ready to participate."

Students paired up to work on the projects, and selected some of their favorite books. Teachers say this has been a great project, because it's not only getting students excited about reading, but teaching them the importance of teamwork and how critical it is to participate in their community.
