FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) -- Marian College says it is changing its name to Marian University.

The name change took effect Thursday and was announced Friday after passage of resolutions by the Marian Board of Trustees and the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Agnes.

Marian was founded by the religious order in 1936 with a student body of 42. The Catholic liberal arts school in Fond du Lac now has nearly 3,000 students.

School president Josefina Castillo Baltodano says the transition will enable the university "to provide new undergraduate and graduate programming, and infuse the curriculum with global perspectives of particular interest to international students."
