WHITEWATER, Wis. (AP) -- Thousands of students are going a sixth day with no heat or hot water in their dorms and other buildings at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and officials say they don't expect to have the problem fixed until Thursday.
A boiler explosion last Wednesday during routine maintenance caused no serious injuries but shut down the steam used for the heating and hot water system.
The services were knocked out for the entire campus, except for hot showers available at the Athletic Services Building. Those showers have been made available to students during daytime hours since Friday, with the stadium locker room used for men and the visitors locker room for women.
Students living off the campus have made their hot showers available to others. Of the 10,500 students at UW-Whitewater, about 3,600 students live in the 11 residence halls on campus.
The blast also caused a nearby dining hall to be closed as a precaution because of asbestos in the boiler's insulation.
The hall reopened Monday.
