Summer is approaching all too quickly, and if you're itching to get out for one last Kayaking hurrah, then you'll probably want to check out the Midwest Freestyle Championship in Wausau this weekend.

Freestyle classes have been running since Thursday, but starting at 10 a.m. Saturday morning, competitors will be gearing up and bringing the heat. You can find the action at one place: along the eastern channel of the Wisconsin River in Downtown Wausau.

Three categories of freestyle-beginner, intermediate, and expert- will allow athletes of all skill levels to make their marks over the hydraulic features of the river. Sunday will decide the final victors during the last battles.

Sunday also boasts the much-anticipated Boatercross where competitors begin in heats racing down the white water rapids. Then, the top finalists from each heat race for the finish line.

The team event at the freestyle competition is unique to Wausau as well, where three paddlers have two minutes to rack up points by throwing tricks in the hole. Every team has their own strategy; some have 2 people in the hole at the same time while others take turns. The competition is all about style and fun with some teams throwing paddles, shooting squirt guns, party surfing, and more.

Professional Boaters Colin Kemp and John McConville from Jackson Kayak will also be returning to duke it out against the best of the Midwest for the title of Midwest Freestyle Champion. From loops (flips), to cartwheels, spins, and split-wheels, it's going to be a show indeed.
