MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A proposal to fix Wisconsin's $527 million budget shortfall is just a vote away from being sent to Gov. Jim Doyle for vetoes.
The Republican-controlled Assembly is scheduled to vote on the bill Wednesday. The Senate passed it Tuesday on a 17-16 vote, with one Democrat switching sides to vote against it.
A number of Republicans in the Assembly are expected not to vote for the bill. But Minority Leader Jim Kreuser, a Democrat from Kenosha, has said there will be enough Democrats who support it to get the 50 votes needed for passage.
Doyle has not said what parts of the budget he may veto. But he does not like key parts that include delaying a school aid payment and refinancing tobacco payment bonds.
