MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Gov. Jim Doyle says he would like a meeting with legislative leaders to result in an end to the stalemate over how to solve a $527 million budget shortfall.

But Doyle says he doesn't know if a Thursday meeting he is having with leaders of the Senate and Assembly will result in a deal. He says that is up to them.

Doyle is meeting with Democratic Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker and Republican Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch.

Doyle says it's imperative that a deal be struck soon. He says the state will run out of money to pay its bills starting in late July, meaning payments to schools and local governments may have to be prorated.
