When you think of tropical fish and exotic coral reefs, you probably don't think of Wisconsin or anywhere in the north woods for that matter. But if you told that to a Your Town Rhinelander company, they'd say you are wrong.

It may look like a scene from a vacation destination, or somewhere that has a completely different climate than northern Wisconsin. It’s called Doctors Foster and Smith. Director of LiveAquaria.com, Kevin Kohen says the facility is a one of the best in the nation. "It is unique for the north woods of Wisconsin to have an aqua culture facility like ours here. Since were landlocked here in Rhinelander, we have to rely on synthetic sea salt and specialized lighting."

Doctors Foster and Smith is one of the biggest online pet retailers in the United States. They sell everything from dog food to ferret supplies. But what really sets the business apart is its aquaria facility. "We are one of the largest providers of marine and fresh water fish over the internet,” says Kohen.

The facility in Your Town Rhinelander is one of a kind. For the last seven years, they've cared for thousands of exotic fish and coral reefs. Tanks are filled with beautiful clown fish, vibrant coral and some of the most interesting aqua life you'll probably ever see. Kohen says the facilities hands-on approach is a huge factor in the success. "We actually bring these fish into our building and tend to them, care for them, quarantine them. A lot of people in the industry get fish and get fish right back out.” That's not the name of the game here. In order to make an operation like this successful, it takes a lot of time and care.

Shipping fish and coral across the country is no easy feat, but they have found a successful way to do it. "We actually package these fish up and ship them next day FedEx. You can actually order what you like and it will be at your door,” says Kohen. Those items go to buyers around the world.

Ensuring each bag is filled with extra air, sealed and will remain warm through the shipment is also part of the job, Kohen say that healthy marine life is what makes the business so successful.
“When you purchase fish from us, they're well adapted to conditions and they should thrive in your aquarium. Success stories like that are what workers at Doctors Foster and Smith's LiveAquaria Facility say make their efforts worth it. That’s why when its freezing cold outside, you can be sure to find them in their own little tropical get-away.
