The Need is Growing: Share Your Holidays Food Drive Underway

It's supper time at the Sleet home. A quick frozen pizza is going in the oven after a busy day. Supper, or any meal for that matter, is never taken for granted here.

One week after Victor Sleet lost two jobs in one day, his family--which includes 10-month old Zander and 3-year old Timmy--didn't have any food or even a place to live.

"With the loss of the jobs, we lost our place to live, we lost just about everything. We pawned everything we owned just to make ends meet," says Victor Sleet.

With no family in the area to fall back on, the Sleets ended up at the Salvation Army Homeless Shelter.

Victor says he and his wife Carrie might have lost their kids if not for the Salvation Army.

Two weeks ago, they moved out of the shelter and into a new apartment--with all the furniture coming from The Neighbors' Place.

Local charities say their story is all too common.

"The United Way did some studies and they came up with the fact that during the last two years, the need throughout Marathon County in all pantries has risen between 20% and 35%" says Tom Rau of The Neighbors' Place.

To meet that growing need this year, we're adding a third week to the annual NewsChannel 7 Share Your Holidays food drive.

It starts Friday, November 26th and runs through December 17th.

You've been incredibly generous to our cause over the years--between your donations and the matching funds, we've raised more than $130,000 and tons of food.

All of it has goes to The Neighbors' Place and Salvation Army. That's good news to the Sleets and all the families just like them.

If you would like to help, just drop off non-perishable food items or money at NewsChannel 7 or River Valley Bank locations. You can also drop off non-perishable food at Shopko, Perkins Restaurants or Wausau Area Shell Stations.
