The Wausau area has seen a number of devastating accidents involving bicyclists recently, and with little to no protection against on-the-go drivers who are increasingly texting while driving, biker safety has become a growing concern.
A current survey shows over 17,000 cyclists die or are seriously injured every year due to road accidents, which is a statistic on local bike shop owner is hoping to change.
Sprocketz Bike Shop Owner John Nowaczyk is actively promoting the Share and Be Aware campaign around town. After his close friend was involved in a tragic accident, he says he realized this issue was something that he needed to help change.
Billboards and flyers now cover the area promoting biker safety, in hopes that people will take the steps needed to make the roads safer for bicyclists and drivers alike.
Among other things, Nowaczyk encourages all bikers to wear helmets, wear biker ID bands, and to always stay aware of their surrroundings. Also, he says a new push will be on sporting blinking red lights that make cyclists more noticeable on the roads.
