Mother's day weekend came and went all too quickly, and with the weight of those holiday festivities sinking in, it's about due time for a Monday morning pick me up. That's why we dropped by Wausau's YMCA to get the skinny on an oblique work out that will get your blood pumping for the week.
Ab and core exercises are essential to maintaining a healthy level of personal fitness, says YMCA Fitness Instructor Vickie Christianson. She showed us that with a mat and the right technique, you can lock in your obliques to get that flat and toned stomach you've been aiming for.
Certain paces and positions can be modified to get the results you need at the level you're most comfortable with. By starting in what Christianson calls the "T" position, you can start the traditional exercise by having your legs extended out. Next, take your arm from the skyward position and curl it under your body while rotating your obliques tightly to warm up the core zone.
If this is too complicated, lower your intensity level by bending your knee onto the mat and continuing the same arm movements, while of course, keeping your obliques locked tight.
