If you've been wanting to get into fishing, but haven't decided yet to make the investment by buying the gear or the license, then this weekend is your chance to test the waters before you make the definite plunge. It's officially Wisconsin's free fishing weekend.

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Biologist Tom Meronek says the event has been a popular event for over twenty years since it first began. He says it's a way to get people out there who wouldn't normally take the chance because of gear prices while also serving as a great promotion for those in the community to get out on the rivers and lakes to fish.

Meronek says that even though it is free fishing weekend, all the same regulations still apply, this is not free for all. He says you still are to put back Sturgeon and other fish species that are not in season at this time. Also, most areas in Wisconsin are safe for fishing but there are certain waters that are considered "impaired" waters which shouldn't be used.

His tips for first-time-fishers include first, enjoying the time outside with your company as he admitted taking his kids fishing is one of his favorite past time activities. Next, he says to keep it simple and perhaps even go for the bobber and a worm starting out.

Several clinics will lend out gear and are offering free instruction here in the community. For information on those, fishing regulations, impaired waters and any details regarding the event, visit the DNR's web site at dnr.wi.gov.
