The Oconto County Sheriff's Office says bones discovered about 35 miles southeast of Crandon are not human.

According to a news release, on June 29 the Oconto County Sheriff’s Department received a call indicating the possibility of human remains being found in Archibald Lake, Town of Townsend.

The caller was an off duty Green Bay Police Department Officer who is also a member of that department’s dive team. The officer was on vacation doing some recreational diving and found what he thought were skeletal remains. A decision was made to request the assistance of the Green Bay Police Department dive team and continue the search on Saturday. On Saturday, a number of bones were collected.

A Forensic Anthropologist says the bone are not human.

Initially there was an unauthorized release of information by a law enforcement officer, not associated with Oconto County’s investigation, that indicated they were human remains. This was incorrect.
