It's a reality that cancer patients know all too well, losing hair and confidence in themselves during chemo therapy treatments. However, one Rothschild salon is partnering up with the Rapunzel Project to raise money for a device that could help those patients' keep their hair.
Fashion Villa and Salon/Spa will be hosting a silent auction August 1st to raise money for a single cold cap, something that can cost up to as much as a high quality wig, comparably $1,500. Depending on the duration of a patients treatment, the price can drastically increase.
Cold caps have been fairly popular in Europe but as of late, they're making a breakthrough in the U.S. with almost 1,000 success stories to date.
These special caps are cooled to an extremely cold temperature and are worn before, during, and after chemotherapy to cool the hair follicles and prevent chemo toxins from reaching them, allowing most patients to save their hair.
Salon Owner Brenda Haugan, said once she decided to get involved with the Rapunzel Project, everyone in the salon hopped on board. Soon enough, one of the employees began making flower accessories so she could sell and donate the profits to the cause.
Haugan says there is a cold cap success story here in Wausau, but she couldn't share the name as she felt it too personal to reveal at this time. She' hoping the patient will come forth at the fundraiser to share her success story with the community and attest to the incredible worth of the cold caps.
The silent auction will be held August 1st, but donation boxes will be placed in the following salons throughout that month until the end of September: Mary's Hair Design, Geneva's Specialists, Studio 102, and Elle Studio. For more information on the project, you can visit rapunzelproject.org.
