A bizarre accident Monday shut down one lane of traffic near the intersection of Sturgeon Eddy road and Grand avenue.
Emergency crews say a fuel tank fell off a Fed-Ex truck.
The driver of the truck immediately stopped and threw down oil-dry in order to prevent the fuel from spreading out on the street. Fire crews then used buckets to catch fuel leaking from the tank. Once most of it was drained, the tank was removed.
According to Wausau Fire Department Battalion Chief Paul Czarapata, "This happens once in a while. It usually isn't spontaneous, where a tank spontaneously falls off. It's generally the result of an accident where somebody hits the tank and breaks the straps."
Czarapata also says diesel spills are actually less dangerous than regular gas spills because diesel doesn't ignite as easily. Still, a diesel spill can make the roads slippery and cause other accidents.
