Kids want the hottest trends. Moms just want a good deal.

At NewsChannel 7, we're working hard to save you money on back to school shopping this year.

So for what to buy, and when, we teamed up with DealNews.com, a website that tracks deals throughout the year.

The big question is... How do you get the most bang for your buck?

Just like with most things... It's all about timing.

Lindsay Sakraida says, "Typically September and October are the best times to buy jeans because they're trying to unload what didn't sell in the back to school sales."

Patience can really pay off here. We're talking brand names like Abercrombie and American Eagle for as little as $20 in some cases.

You should also hold off on buying winter gear as long as you can.

"You might wanna wait until late September, October, even November if you can for coats, north face fleeces, they're not gonna see their best discounts right now."

There are few cases where the earlier you buy the better, especially with backpacks. Sears, Lands End and Amazon are offering discounts as steep as 70%.

It's the same story with the things that go in them.

"There's really no incentive to hold off on purchasing school supplies. A lot of stores like Staples and Office Max, they're offering special promotions that just won't get any better after the school year starts."
Something else that won't get any better - the deal going on at JC Penney right now. Through the end of August, they'll cut your kid's hair for free. The only catch is you'll have to call ahead to make an appointment. More than 1,200 people in Wausau have already done that, taking advantage of the major savings."

The steals and deals are definitely out there this year. You'll just have to do your homework.

As far as electronics go, things like laptops won't hit rock bottom prices until Black Friday.

But if you need a computer now, you can cash in on some freebies being offered, things like free printers, cameras, gift cards, even game systems like XBox 360 and Playstations.
