Snowmobiler Dies in Chippewa County

The DNR says an 81-year-old man died after his snowmobile crashed Monday afternoon.

The DNR says the 81-year-old man was going ice fishing and took off on his snowmobile on 197th street near Little Lake Wissota. It happened just after 4 p.m. in Chippewa County.

The DNR says the snowmobile accelerated and went off the embankment, going airborne and hitting the ice and rocks of Paint Creek below. The DNR says the snowmobile hit the bridge pillar. He was taken to the hospital, but the DNR says he passed away.

The man's name has not been released. The crash is under investigation.
