It could be argued that Wisconsin has some of the best snowmobile trails in the world.
And while some shutter at a foot of fresh powder, for those who enjoy the sport of snowmobiling, it's a precious natural resource.
One area county is anxious for the upcoming season. Langlade County is branded as 'The County of Trails,' and it's easy to see why.
"The snowmobile trails in the county are upwards of 550 miles now, which I believe is the second largest in the state," said Recreation Coordinator Tammy Kubiaczyk.
That's only behind Marathon County, which boasts 780 miles of snowmobile trails.
Kubiaczyk is already receiving calls in anticipation for the season to officially begin. But the average of 5 to 8 inches throughout the area isn't enough for her to give the green light.
"With just about six more inches of snow this trail, along with every other trail will be buzzing with snowmobiles," she said.
Oneida County has about the same amount of snowfall and opened their trails on Wednesday. Vilas County has an envious 12 inches. Each county has a different set of standards.
"It differs," Kubiaczyk says. "We try to go along with other counties but like I said it just depends on how much snow we get."
In this tough economic time, the more white stuff, the better.
"It's a pretty huge thing in Wisconsin, it has a huge economic impact, especially when...you can definitely tell when we have seasons without snow."
For restaurants, hotels and other businesses up north, this snowmobile season may be pivotal in keeping their doors open.
But if the snowy forecast is right, trails this year could offer the best riding in the world.
