MARTELL, Wis. (AP) -- A herd of cows trying to cross a raging river in northwestern Wisconsin was swept away by the swift current.
The herd endured six inches of rain in a pasture near Martell in Pierce County Wednesday. But when the 80 cows tried to cross the swollen Rush River to get back to their barn for feeding, they were caught in the fast-moving water.
Doreen Smith says she was stunned to see a couple dozen cows "all in a blob" flying by in the river's current.
Farmer Tim Wiff got some help from friends and neighbors and was able to round up most of the cattle. Some were found three miles downstream. Wiff says about 10 to 15 heifers are still missing.
