With high gas prices, many people are looking to take a trip that won't break the bank. As part of our special series "Trips on a Tank", we took a trip to the Northwoods to see how families can spend the weekend without spending an arm and a leg.
Just about one hour north of Wausau, you can find one of the state's most popular tourist stops, the Minocqua area. Many people come to enjoy watersports and outdoor recreation during the summer, but there's much more to do once you get here.
"Whether you want to walk in the woods, do some canoeing, shopping, horseback riding, eating at some fun restaurants, you can choose your activity no matter what time of day", said Minocqua Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Kim Baltus.
"We kind of think it wouldn't be a trip to the Northwoods without breakfast at Paul Bunyan's, it's all you can eat, it's a lot of fun, it's historical, it's got a good setting, a log cabin", added Baltus.
There are many other restaurants to sample and downtown Minocqua is home to some of the Northwoods' best shopping.
"Shopping is good too, you can always get wonderful souveniers that you really don't see anywhere else. Anything to help you remember the Northwoods and the fun that you had here", said Baltus.
The 24 hour visitors center at the Minocqua Area Chamber of Commerce on Highway 51 is a great resource to help plan your trip. No matter what time you arrive in Minocqua, you can stop in and find countless pamphlets on the wide variety of activities that the area has to offer.
