With high gas prices, many people are looking to take a trip that won't break the bank. As part of our special series "Trips on a Tank", we take a look at one of the most popular family activities in Eagle River...fishing.

Eagle River is home to the world's largest chain of connected lakes and if you're looking for some good fishing, then you're in the right spot and all you need is a good guide.

Ranger Rick Krueger has been fishing the Eagle River chain of lakes for 31 years. He's a professional fisherman, guide and owner of Guide's Choice Pro Shop.

For about $225 for a half day, he or one of his guides will teach you and your kids how to fish like a pro.

"Pumping the rod, jigging for Walleye...that's an art. You learn how to do that and you're going to fool more fish to bite your bait than the guy sitting next to you, that don't know how to do that", said Ranger Rick.

Eagle River is home to some of the best Walleye, Musky and Smallmouth Bass fishing in the country.

The guides provide the boat, tackle and lures. All you need is a lunch and a willingness to learn.

"They'll teach you what you wanna know about how and why you're catching fish so you can go do it on your own, after you've gone out fishing with them", said Rick.

Father and son outings are very popular. Rick says, a trip with 3 kids and their dad was one of his most memorable guiding trips.

"I took 'em out there, put 'em on the spots. I gotta tell you what, those kids caught 110 fish in 4 hours. I never saw more fun than watching them catch Walleyes, Crappies, they had 2 at a time and they were laughing. I could hardly get 'em off the line in time", said Rick.

The spring season got off to late start and because of that, Rick says the next 4 to 6 weeks will be some of the best Walleye fishing Eagle River has seen in years.
