Great Gardens: Hospice House Garden

At the Aspirus campus in Wausau, it's all about health. But healthy doesn't even get close to describing the garden surrounding The Hospice House.

It's an acre and a quarter of flowering shrubs and perennials. Something always seems to be in bloom. It also has a trickling water feature, benches, a gazeebo and just the right amount of statuary.

The garden was funded by donations and was professionally designed and installed. One professional gardener is also in charge of maintaining it, but it's non-professionals who keep the flowers blooming.

"A lot of the credit goes to the volunteers who work here it's like a social hour with a purpose," says gardener Randy Jeager.

The importance of providing that place of serenity during what can be one of the toughest moments in people's lives is not lost on the folks who keep the garden growing.

Jeager says, "it really picks up people spirits by being out in the beautiful nature at a time when they need to affirm life the most."

The Hospice House Garden will be among those featured in this year's Wausau Garden walk on Friday, July 13 and Saturday, July 14.
