Botox is no longer just for the rich and famous. Average Americans are getting that smooth, wrinkle-free look made famous by celebrities.
Cosmetic procedures are on the rise, even in Central Wisconsin.
"From 2009 to 2010 we've increased by 25 percent in Botox and 45 percent in derma fillers," said Dr. Terry Bucan, owner of DermaRenew Medical Cosmetic Care in Weston.
Nationally, Botox injections were the most common non-surgical cosmetic procedures performed, at 5.38 million.
Dr. Bucan says more people are taking advantage of the quick procedure that gives patients a younger, fresher look.
"People like to look their best so if there is a non-invasive, no down time procedure to make you look and feel better I think people are taking advantage of it," she said.
Botox is also used to treat neck spasms, excessive sweating, and migraine headaches.
Dr. Stephen Fox, a plastic surgeon with Plastic Surgery Group in Wausau agrees. He says people do cosmetic procedures to feel better about themselves, and though the bulk of his practice is reconstructive surgery, non-surgical procedures are catching up.
"The greatest increase we've seen is with the non-invasive procedures such as Botox or fillers," Dr. Fox said.
The amount of Botox one needs depends on each individual, and the cost varies. A session can cost anywhere from $100 to $500.
Though Botox is quick and easy, it doesn't mean it's necessary.
Last week a California mother went on national television admitting to giving her 8-year-old daughter Botox injections to prepare her for a beauty pageant. People were outraged, and the mother is now under investigation.
