Wis. Court: Higher Health, Pension Payments Legal

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A state appeals court says Eau Claire County officials legally forced the sheriff and treasurer to contribute more to their health care and pensions.

Gov. Scott Walker's law stripping most public workers of their union rights also required workers to contribute more to their health insurance and retirement.

The Eau Claire County Board passed an ordinance increasing contributions. Sheriff Ron Cramer and Treasurer Larry Lokken filed a lawsuit arguing state law prohibits counties from changing elected officials' compensation during their terms.

The 3rd District Court of Appeals disagreed, ruling Tuesday benefits generally aren't seen as direct compensation.

Cramer and Lokken's attorney didn't immediately return messages.
