MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Gov. Scott Walker says state aid targeted to high-performing schools could be given to teachers in those districts as bonuses.

Walker discussed the idea Friday at the state education conference attended by teachers, administrators and others from across the state.

Walker drew anger from teachers in 2011 after he effectively took away their ability to collectively bargain and deeply cut aid to schools. Teachers were a driving force behind the drive to recall Walker last year.

But Walker drew applause Friday when he said his next budget would increase funding for public schools. He says even more money will be targeted to schools showing improvement or those already at a high level.

Walker says he also will provide incentive to low-performing schools that have a plan to turn things around.
