Drivers in Wisconsin could have to pay a fee based on how much they drive in the near future.

Mileage fees, along with raising the fuel tax and raising vehicle registration fees are some options the newly formed Transportation Finance & Policy Commission is looking at.

The commission was formed by the state Legislature to deal with falling revenue projections for state highways.

If the state raised the fuel tax by one cent, it would generate $32 million dollars in one year. Raising vehicle registration by a dollar would earn $3.5 million.

Drivers already pay a lot to own a car. According to AAA, the average car owner spends nearly $9,000 a year on gas, maintenance, registration fees and financing.

The commission is to have final recommendations by the end of the year.
