Vos says Assembly won't Raise Per Diems

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Incoming state Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says lawmakers will not be getting more money to pay for their daily expenses.

Vos said Tuesday that the $88 per day available to cover hotels and meals when lawmakers come to Madison will remain unchanged. Those who live in or close to Madison get $44 per day.

Vos had earlier said Assembly leaders were talking about increasing per diem reimbursements which are on top of lawmakers' $49,943 annual salary.

Vos made the announcement to reporters working in the press room in the Capitol. He did not give a reason for keeping per diems the same before walking away. His spokeswoman said later he would have no other comment.

Republicans who control the Senate have said they will not be raising the per diem.
