MILWAUKEE (AP) -- U.S. Senate candidate Tommy Thompson is responding to a campaign ad that has him saying he would eliminate Medicare and Medicaid and criticisms that he's not campaigning enough.

A panel of professional journalists interviewed the former Republican governor Friday at the Milwaukee Press Club.

The television ad has Thompson telling a conservative group in June that he would do away with Medicare and Medicaid. But on Friday the former governor said he wants to save Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security but they need adjustments.

Thompson also went through his busy schedule for the next several days and said he has never taken a campaign for granted. He also said no one will ever be able to outwork him.

Thompson takes on Democratic opponent Tammy Baldwin Nov. 6.
