Republican candidates Nancy VanderMeer and Dan Wald both hope to see their names on the ballot come Novemeber. But only one of them will make it through the primaries and take on democratic incumbant Sue Vruwink.

Both candidates top priorities include creating and sustaining jobs, lowering taxes, restoring fiscal responsibility in Wisconsin and strengthening education.

Nancy VanderMeer of Tomah prides herself on her business experience and community involvement. She currently runs the VanderMeer Motor Company and has served on the Board of Directors for the Tomah Chamber of Commerce and the Handi Shop. The Handi Shop is a community based organization that is dedicated to ensuring handicapped individuals have access to a safe work environment. VanderMeer also sat on the Executive Board for Tomah Memorial Hospital.

When asked about her character, Nancy responded saying, "I am sincere, very dedicated and always like to describe myself as determined. I will not give up easily."

Not only does she hope her determination and perseverance will win her the seat, but, once in office, help her bridge, what she calls, the "skills gap" in the economy.

"My priorities are jobs, continue on with fiscal responsibility of the economy, the state budgesting, also education, developing those technical and career pathways for students as they grow in the workforce," VanderMeer said.

Rival Dan Wald of Pittsville also ranks jobs and reducing economic regulation as top priorities.

"I see our businesses hampered by regulation. It adds to the cost and eventually that's passed on to the consumer and it limits our freedom," Wald told NewsChannel 7.

He says his extensive experience in the private sector will help him in reducing these regulatory burdens. Wald currently works for Wisconsin Homes in Marshfield and has experience in construction, manufacturing and farming. He also has a degree in industrial technology from UW-Stout.

"I strongly believe in freedom and liberty, individual freedoms, liberties, responsibilities, free markets and economic prosperity. I am definitely against having all this government on top of private citizens and our businesses," Wald said.

The 70th district encompasses parts of Wood, Portage and Marathon Counties.
