MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Wisconsin Sen. Herb Kohl gave his final speech from the Senate floor.
Kohl took office in 1989 for his first of four terms. The 77-year-old is stepping down after his current term is up Jan. 2. At the completion of his term on January 2, 2013, Kohl will be Wisconsin’s second-longest serving United States Senator, along with former Senator Alexander Wiley who also served as Wisconsin’s Senator for 24 years.
Kohl serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and he chairs the Special Committee on Aging. He also sits on the Senate's appropriations and banking committees.
Kohl owns the Milwaukee Bucks, and consistently ranks as one of Congress's wealthiest members. He ran on the motto, "Nobody's senator but yours," suggesting he would be answerable to the people, not to special interests.
He will be replaced by fellow Democrat Tammy Baldwin.
