Final Push for Wisconsin Budget

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Governor Scott Walker and Republican legislative leaders are nearing an agreement on the last three big pieces of the state budget.

The deal they are crafting would expand voucher schools statewide, cut income taxes by more than $500 million and reject a federal Medicaid expansion even though taking it would save state money.

The deal was expected to be approved on Tuesday by the Legislature's budget-writing Joint Finance Committee.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Walker all say a deal is near.

They are trying to weave together a compromise that will appease moderates and tea party conservatives within their caucuses to make sure the budget can pass despite universal opposition from minority Democrats.
