Getting America to Give Up Its Gas Guzzlers

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Lawmakers are working on legislation to get you out of that old car of yours and into something a little leaner and greener.

It's called Cash for Clunkers and the goal is to get Americans out of gas guzzlers and into more fuel efficient cars.

Proposals being discussed in the House and Senate would give consumers vouchers of up to $5,000 to turn in their old vehicles.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi says the measure would have other benefits than just helping the auto industry like reducing emissions and dependence on foreign oil.

A similar program in Germany helped boost car sales by 20 percent and analysts say it could mean a million more cars sold annually in the U.S.
