The Vilas County Dispatch Center is warning of telephone scam.
They say over the weekend they received several reports from people that received automated phone calls in reference to their credit card or debit card accounts being frozen due to online orders.
In this message, was included a number to call in order to unlock your card. This number is (973)448-2000.
When you call the number back, it goes to a voicemail to the Roxbury, New Jersey town hall. The Roxbury Town Hall has a voice mail message stating that they are getting numerous calls to have people verify their account information or to have a debit card unlocked. Roxbury did not send out these calls, it is a scam from an outside party. Somehow, their phone system has been hacked and is being used for this scam.
The Vilas County Sheriff’s Office is recommending residents to not call the number back.
