Summer Heat Good For Some Local Businesses

It may be hard to believe, but this hot weather has actually been good for some local businesses.

People seem willing to spend more money to try and stay cool.

From pool memberships and outdoor sporting goods to boats, sales are up across the board.

The Marathon County Parks Department reports twice as many people are visiting county pools this year than last.

Last year at this time 6,320 people attended various aqcuatic centers.

This year that number has grown to 13,831.

While the increased revenue from membership fees may be a good thing for the local economy, it creates challenges for pool goers.

"It's crowded. It's hard to find seats when you just want to relax . It's a lot of people." Weston pool patron Alycia Adams said.

Pools aren't the only one's enjoying increased business.

Theresa Shepherd, co-owner of Shepherd & Schaller Sporting Goods, told us water sport sales have been a lot more popular this season.

So popular, in fact, that Shepherd & Schaller has trouble keeping tubes, standing upright paddle boards and kayaks in stock.

Even boats are on backorder.

President and owner of M&J Marine, Ray Polzer, told us there is a shortage of product.

"Since everything is now built to order," Polzer said, "the problem is when you have an uptake, which we're having right now this year, you run out of merchandise."

Despite the high demand, Polzer says not to worry.

If you're thinking about buying a boat the wait is only a few weeks.

Both Polzer and Shepherd think a trend towards family togetherness is also contributing to the increase in boat and water sport sales.
