You've heard of Black Friday, Cyber Monday, maybe even Small Business Saturday. But how about Giving Tuesday?

Charities are behind this day in an effort to get Americans to take a break on their holiday shopping and focus on giving to those in need.

Perhaps the most ubiquitous holiday charity is the Salvation Army and its Red Kettle Campaign, but unfortunately in Marathon County donations for the season are down.

The campaign began November 9th and so far people have generously donated about $39,000, but to hit its $160,000 goal, people will have to reach deeper into their pockets.

To make matters worse, fewer people are volunteering to be bell ringers, and nearly half of the 26 kettles set up across the area are abandoned. Volunteers can still sign up.

"We have many people on staff that can get them squared away with a time and a location that they'd like to be at," said Lt. Jacob Tripp, with the Salvation Army.

He says the Wausau community isn't the only one that's behind in donations so far this year, and that other areas are also finding lighter kettles.

For those who don't carry cash, Lt. Tripp recommends they use a credit card to give online.

Of course there are many other charities and non-profit organizations that could use help this holiday season.

There are also many ways families can help their communities. Ideas include holding a bake sale and donating the proceeds, collecting household items and clothing and giving them to a family in need, or sponsoring a family to ensure their children get a gift on Christmas.
