One out of every eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. It's a frightening statistic, but fortunately early detection can save your life.

Now, a grant program is helping make sure women can get screened, no matter what their income is.

Thanks to $350,000 in funding from Susan G. Komen for the Cure - Central Wisconsin and other sponsors, Aspirus Women's Health is making sure any woman who wants one can get a mammogram through their mobile mammography unit.

Women who have no insurance or have insurance but can't afford their deductible can get a free mammogram or evaluation of a new breast problem, like a lump.

It works the same as if you were going to the doctor for an appointment. The mobile unit moves through the region a dozen times a year, including for a stop Tuesday in Tomahawk.

"We've actually diagnosed three cancers with this program in the first four years, none so far this year," said Jennifer Smith, the outreach coordinator for Aspirus Women's Health. "Two were breast cancer and one was a lymphoma," she said.

Smith has since spoken with two of the women, who she says are doing well.

Since the program began, nearly 1,000 women have called to see if they qualify for the free breast health exam.

Two-thirds of them have qualified instead for the Well Women Program, a government-funded program that also covers mammograms, as well as pelvic exams and pap smears.

"We're really proud of the collaboration that we have. In either case we can get women covered for those services that they might be missing otherwise," Smith said.

The next free breast care screening is October 13th at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. To see if they qualify, women can call 1-800-847-4707.
