Back To School Shopping Fun for Kids, Rough On the Budget

The National Retail Federation reports that the average American family will spend $688.62 on back to school shopping. That's up nearly $80 from last year.

Although there may be a lot of good deals out there, even the small stuff can add up quickly. NewsChannel 7 looked into what it would cost this year to get your kids ready for school using the school supply list for D.C. Everest Middle School. Purchasing just was what was on list, and even selecting on-sale items, we spent $70.61.

That total only covered supplies for one student and did not include backpacks, lunch boxes and clothing. Our total was right on track with the National Retail Federation predicting parents with kids in grades K-12 will spend at least $90 on school supplies.

Danica Szekeress who is a parent and teacher said, "I'm sure that we'll probably have parents who will say they didn't have a chance to buy supplies this year yet because it's costing a little bit more. I've had that in years past too."

Another parent told us she expects to spend as much as $100 on her daughter's back to school supplies this year.
