Postal Inspectors are warning you to watch out for a slew of bogus checks they say are circulating around the state. The warning comes as a part of National Consumer Protection Week. Postal Inspectors are criss crossing the state to warn consumers about the dangers of cashing bogus checks.
Postal Inspector Lori Groen, says mailing bogus checks is one of the most popular scams in the state. She says some of these bogus checks have authentic account and routing numbers making it difficult even for banks to know the difference. She says consumers that cash bogus checks can be held responsible for the full amount of the check and any bank fees. Groen offers these tips for consumers. " Know who you are dealing with and if they want speed, they have to have the money now, something is probably up, says Groen.
She says its hard to break up counterfeit check scams because most originate overseas and the problem is so wide spread they set up a website to help consumers detect authentic checks. For details click on the link below.
