MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Reports of telemarketers violating Wisconsin's "No Call List" shot up in 2007, easily staying on top of the list of the most consumer complaints to the state.
The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says there were 3,194 complaints about telemarketing among the written grievances filed last year, continuing a trend that saw them top the list the previous three years.
Glen Loyd of the Division of Trade and Consumer Protection says the 'No Call List' is the most popular consumer protection in Wisconsin, and that's why people follow through and report violations.
The list was created in 2003 and allows people to register, showing they do not wish to receive telemarketing calls.
The agency deals with complaints by writing to the telemarketers and threatening an investigation if they don't stop.
Loyd says consumers should be aware of criminal telemarketers that block the caller ID and substitute what appears to be a local number.
Next on the consumer complaint list, just as they were the last two years, were telecommunications in second place and landlord-tenant issues in third.
Here is the Top 10 list of the most consumer complaints to the state last year, with the numbers.
