MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Residents in Milwaukee and Grant counties who had flooding damage from the July rains will now have a chance at federal assistance.

Gov. Jim Doyle appealed an earlier Federal Emergency Management Agency decision that denied assistance to individuals and businesses.

In a news release Saturday, he said FEMA conducted new assessments after his appeal.

State Emergency Management Division spokeswoman Lori Getter says they found more damaged houses with living spaces in basements.

She says 231 houses in Milwaukee County had major flood damage and Grant County had 15.

Residents are now eligible to apply for federal grants. Low interest loans are also available to individuals and businesses.

Doyle says FEMA is also making assistance available to local government in Calumet County. There's still a pending application for Waukesha County.
