One of the main reasons for holding the Race for the cure is to honor survivors of breast cancer and celebrate them overcoming adversity.

In talking with breast cancer survivors, many of them prefer to use the term conquering instead of surviving. And they are doing that conquering with other women who have gone through the same thing they have.

"It's amazing that we can all be here together and have such a support. I'm a breast cancer survivor and it means a lot to me that there's so many here," Carol Ann, a breast cancer survivor said.

"Just that feeling of everybody's behind everybody. Everybody's been in the same situation and it's just overpowering and it gives you an uplift of spirit," Kathy Martens, a breast cancer survivor said.

"It is really good for me to have the support of all my friends because if I didn't have that, I don't know if I would have survived," Sandee Paye, a breast cancer survivor said.

Many of the women say they're thrilled to finally have a race close to home that they can be a part of.

"It's wonderful to have this here because I've always been waiting for something like this to come to the central Wisconsin area," Mertens said.

"This is such a big celebration for me. It's been 22 years that I've been a cancer survivor and just to see all the people here come together and support all of us is really amazing," Paye said.

One woman I talked to signed up for the race four months before she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

She recently completed treatment and is happy to support her fellow survivors.

"I just celebrate all the women that went before me that still have had to have chemo. I had a special new test that didn't have to have chemo. I just had radiation and I'm thrilled and I salute all those who went before me," Barbara Powell, a breast cancer survivor said.

Nearly 200 breast cancer survivors took part in the race.
